Today was a scorcher at 28 degrees - pretty awesome for May 2nd! Average last frost date is May 7th for Edmonton!!! Here's to another great growing year everyone! To get our community interaction going, we've schedule a few coffee parties throughout the growing season.
We are encouraging people to bring spare bedding plants and spare produce to share with others or donate to charities if we have a bumper year. These are intended to be short, informal sessions to get some tidying done, but mostly check in with your neighbour gardener or help out if someone is on vacation and their bed needs some loving care! There will be coffee parties on: May 4 - 9:30 to 10:30 am May 12 - 7:30 to 8:30 pm June 1 - 9:30 to 10:30 am June 9 - 7:30 to 8:30 pm July 6 - 9:30 to 10:30 am July 14 - 7:30 to 8:30 pm Aug 3 - 9:30 to 10:30 am Aug 11 - 7:30 to 8:30 pm Sept 7 - 9:30 to 10:30 am Keep an eye on the calendar to keep up with planned events! April 20th was our garden contract/plot assignment meeting, potluck and blessing of the land. Thanks to everyone who came for the events and supported the garden!
There may be a 4'x4' plot left, if you are interested in signing up, please send us an email using the contact page or fpcgcontact@gmail.com. The first work session was held on Saturday April 23rd. While it wasn't the warmest spring day, all volunteers got a lot of cleanup work done and identified some materials we need to pick up to support the 2016 growing season. Thanks Everyone!! THi Folks!
We've set up a pruning and bud grafting seminar for the 2016 growing year! The event proceeds will go the the community garden, and will give interested gardeners a chance to learn more about pruning and grafting for increased fruit production! Thanks to Joachim for volunteering his time to run the session, info below, and on the Facebook page. Signup will start at our meeting this Thursday! We gathered last night to give thanks for all this garden has provided, including friendships, community and food! We planted a variety of tulip bulbs for the promise of a new spring, and then enjoyed a terrific potluck dinner together! We have accomplished a lot this year, and have much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving.
Fulton Place is having a Garden Tour July 15 and 16 from 4:30 to 8:00 pm! We have so many beautiful yards in our neighbourhood, so come join us to get a closer look at some of these wonderful gardens! This is a self-guided tour that you can bike, walk or drive. Tickets and tour maps will be available at the Sunshine Garden on the days of the tour. Proceeds will be donated to the Sunshine Garden so please consider supporting this event and visit and explore some beautiful gardens!
Thank you to everyone who helped make the official opening of the Sunshine Garden a fantastic event. Thank you to those who came early to help set up tables and chairs, hauling them one by one up the stairs. Thank you to those that brought flowers from your yards, and then arranged them into stunningly beautiful bouquets! Thank you to those that spoke during the program - you all did such a wonderful job. Thank you to those who led the information stations and provided people with interesting ideas to take back into their own lives and gardens. Thank you to those who organized and volunteered at the kid’s activities, it was a real highlight for families! Thank you to those who brought food to share - we had enough treats and goodies to feed everyone. Thank you to those who helped organize the event, from sending invites and confirmations, to organizing the dignitaries, to coordinating the children who sang music, played music and read poetry. Thank you to those who stayed to clean up, including wiping down all the chairs afterwards, hauling them all back downstairs, taking down the gazebos, doing the dishes, loading everything up and making everything neat and tidy as it was before.
It was so special to share this garden with our neighbours and contributors, to celebrate what we have done here, and to see the impact we are having on our community, in such a welcoming, wonderful way. Thank you all. Sherry We have lots of activities planned for our Official Opening on June 20th at 10 am. Please join us for short presentation and then take a garden tour around our information stations! Fun for all ages!
